Various Types of Aggregate & Uses for Constructing a Perfect Building

You will find various types of aggregate like fine and coarse aggregate with various sizes and names like crushed stone, silt, medium sand, coarse sand, fine sand, clay and fine gravel, medium gravel, coarse gravel, pebbles cobbles, and boulders.

Aggregate is created from a crushed form of granite rock, metamorphic rock, and sedimentary rock. All the above rock is used for different purposes for various constructions like interior and exterior house designing, pavement, street, road, and building.

Aggregate Types depend on the size

Different size of aggregate is used various purpose in building construction. There are two types: a) Fine aggregate and b) Coarse aggregate

Fine Aggregate

4.75 mm sieve size passes or sieves through the aggregate is called Fine aggregate. The diameter of crushed or sandstone has to maintain less than 9.5 mm.

Various types of fine aggregate with their size

1. Clay: lesser than 0.002 mm
2. Silt: 0.002 - 0.06 mm
3. Fine sand: 0.06 ? 0.25 mm
4. Medium sand: 0.25 ? 0.50 mm
5. Coarse sand: 0.50 ? 2 mm
6. Stone dust: 0.50 ? 5 mm

Sand Uses: Various types of sand uses are Course Sand, medium Sand, fine sand, and stone dust. It uses for PCC work, RCC work, various types of leveling & ground filling, mortar cement formation.

Silt: Various types of Sand, soil, and mud sediments at the sides or bottom of the river are defined as Silt. Silt creates from Quartz & feldspar.

Clay stone: Very fine particles of sedimentary rock are called claystone.

Coarse Aggregate

The aggregate size of 4.75 mm can sieve through in aggregate is called coarse aggregate. The size of coarse aggregate is a range between 5 ? 256mm & greater.

Various Types of coarse aggregate with their size

1. Boulder: Greater than 256 mm
2. Cobbles: 64 ? 256 mm
3. Pebbles: 4 ? 64 mm
4. Coarse gravel: 16 - 64 mm
5. Medium gravel: 8 ? 16 mm
6. Fine gravel: 4 ? 8 mm

Gravel use: Medium size of Course gravel & fine mix of gravel is used for a foundation in building construction. Fine fix and medium-size gravel required for manufacturing construction materials like bricks, concrete blocks, & poles.

? RCC work of construction in building like column beam & slab structure is used 20mm gravel size.
? 40 mm gravel size uses in PCC work for street pavement & road structure.
? 64 mm gravel size of coarse aggregate uses for Dam & retaining wall formation.

Constructors are using all types of (20, 40, and64) mm gravel to construct a bridge.

Uses of pebbles: Sedimentary rock creates pebbles which can be found in river Basin with different shapes & sizes. Various colors and oval-sized shapes of pebbles use in indoor & outdoor designing, ponds, potted plants, & walk-away driveways.

Cobbles use: Sedimentary rock makes cobbles. The cobble size is smaller than boulders but bigger than pebbles. Various types of construction like roads, streets, buildings, & pavement can use these cobbles as basic material.

Uses of Boulder: Boulder can be used simple bridge & retaining wall construction. Moreover, Boulders also use in brick wall construction in rural areas.
